We are not From Here by Jenny Torres Sanchez

I finished this audiobook months ago, leaving me with its final words in awe, in heartache, in hope for change. But, every time, I sat down to write about it, I had no words to properly portray the beauty and tragedy of this story.

WE ARE NOT FROM HERE is a powerful, piercing story about three teens who find themselves running for their lives from dangerous people that lurk in every corner. "Crossing from Guatemala through Mexico, they follow the route of La Bestia, the perilous train system that might deliver them to a better life – if they are lucky enough to survive the journey. With nothing but the bags on their backs and desperation drumming through their hearts, Pulga, Chico, and Pequeña know there is no turning back, despite the unknown that awaits them. And the darkness that seems to follow wherever they go." (Goodreads)

What Jenny Torres Sanchez creates within these pages is something fierce. Not only does she weave together a gripping plot, but she also manages to create vividly courageous characters who break my heart while simultaneously giving me intense hope for our future. These teens are dreamers and their dreams are imperative to share. The violence they run from and the violence they run into is a reality we know exists in our world today. May we never become deaf to the real stories behind the fictional characters. May we know, pray for, and fight for all immigrants seeking asylum. Their stories - their lives - are important.

I have no rating for this one. While the writing didn't always live up to the power of the story, sweet Pulga, Chico, and Pequeña have continued to sit with me and move me and that is what matters most.
