Fascinating Historical Nonfiction about Louis Zamperini: an elite runner, "airwreck" survivor, and POW.
Sometimes books need a second chance in your life. I had bought this one at a Goodwill with every intention of reading it, but over the course of a few years it fell to the wayside and eventually another Goodwill. I’m really grateful I decided to pick it up again on Libby because this book is fantastic.
Louis Zamperini’s experience in WWII (from Airman to castaway to POW to hometown hero) is an incredible and heartbreaking tale. Laura Hillenbrand does a phenomenal job of penning his experience while doing justice to the social, cultural, and psychological conditions at the time. I really appreciated her attention to not only Louis’ story but the overall analysis of wartime society. Both educational and inspiring.
Overall, an incredibly well written book in a genre with historically boring prose (pun very much intended).
Absolutely to anyone who appreciates historical nonfiction or an incredible true story about survival
