The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

SUMMARY: "Paulo Coelho's masterpiece tells the mystical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure. His quest will lead him to riches far different, and far more satisfying, listening to our hearts, of recognizing opportunity and learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, most importantly, to follow our dreams." (Adapted from Goodreads)

REVIEW: I don't read many classics, so I fear my endurance for them is a bit out of practice. Listening to this one on audiobook proved a great choice for the rich language and moving adventure. But, I definitely felt the need to start it all over again when I was done. Hah!

HOWEVER! There are two noteworthy reasons for this relevant to my review:

1. The story was much more character based than event based, so if I missed an important moment of Santiago's reflection, I missed a big portion of the plot. Because of this the story dragged a bit at times, but not enough to keep me from finishing.

2. The story was so richly told with so many beautiful quotable moments and life lessons woven in. I want to purchase a copy and mark it up like a beloved quote book.

Thankfully, the audiobook is only 4 hours long, so you better believe I will dive in - headfirst - at some point to enjoy this lovely story, again!

THE TAKEAWAY: THE ALCHEMIST is a worthwhile story to add to your repertoire of modern classics. It is a timeless tale full of colorful characters and important lessons. I would recommend this one as a great read aloud for kids 12+!!

⁣{ THE ALCHEMIST was originally published in 1988. It is currently published by HarperCollins. }
