Note: I rated it low on my mom scale because it takes A LOT of brainpower. Something that we moms are usually short of. (haha)

Historical Fiction meets modern literary classic. Beautifully written, witty, and profoundly heartwarming.

Every once in a while a book comes along that sets the standard for all the books that come after. For me, that perfectly describes A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW.

Yes, I know, that may sound like pure hyperbole. All of us have our own standards for books that pull away from the pack, but I really honestly believe this one will stand the test of time. At least in my own library.

A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW is masterfully crafted. Amor Towels' syntax is exquisite — honestly, so refreshing in this world of "fast fiction." This book possesses the gift of a brilliant setting and an imaginative plot perfectly tied together with the easily lovable Count Alexander. I honestly felt as though I entered the doors of the Metropol Hotel myself along with the Count that very first day, and every new day was an encounter with this enchanting place as though it were living and breathing like each and every one of us. Every single scene was crafted with such attention to the detail surrounding the quirky and quietly entertaining world of Count Alexander.

There were elements of this story that may be hard for some readers to digest. The Russian History was impressively weaved throughout the story and absolutely lent itself to the greater narrative, but Towels assumes the readers basic understanding of Russian history, so I found myself getting caught up in the facts at certain points. However, he does make light of Russian history a bit — such as detailing the difficulty of names — so, I absolutely felt encouraged in my pursuit of digesting these details. The other difficulty I had with this story is the narrative did drag a little in parts. Towels gift of language is a bit dense at times which caused me to stumble a bit as I read the story.

Overall, a stunning display of story telling I will keep close to my heart for a very long time.

if you love classics and enjoy a dense novel focusing directly on the interior life of its main characters.
